Hungary vs Iceland Match Preview

Hungary have a great chance to qualify for the final stage of the European Championship 2021 as they play at home the decisive match against Iceland. The best news for them is that their key midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai will be able to play from the start after he tested negative in the last Covid-19 test.

In the previous playoff game they managed to beat 1-3 Bulgaria on the road and were without him. After that they got a win and a draw in the Nations League competition where they have done pretty well being ranked second.

In fact, they have quite some quality players who can make the difference in a duel like this like Szoboszlai and Nagy in midfield or the keeper Gulacsi and Orban in defense who play both for RB Leipzig.

Iceland, on the other side, did quite good to reach this stage as they managed to make the best use of the fact they played at home against Romania in the previous game. They got a narrow 2-1 win but it was a pretty close game where Iceland struggled a lot, actually, they were pretty lucky to score two goals with three shots on target. Romania managed to dominate them on ball possession and we are talking about a team that focuses mainly on defense.

Even on the Nations League Iceland has been very poor with four losses in four games played, where they scored just two goals while conceding 11. They are far away from the team which qualified for Euro 2016 and those players are all over 30 years old now.

In conclusion, I think Hungary can win this match or get at least a draw. They come in a better form right now and with the Italian M. Rossi on their bench I expect a solid defensive performance by them, so this is the main reason I find it difficult they could lose here. Iceland failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last five matches.
